Once upon a time, 10 suns rose in the sky, scorching1 many crops and people to death.

A brave man called Hou Yi came to rescue them. He excelled at archery and shot down nine of the suns.

Only one sun was left in the sky to give people light and warmth.

On hearing of his amazing feat2, people came from far and wide to admire Yi.

Among his admirers was Peng Meng, whom Yi accepted as his apprentice3.

Even the Immortals5 noticed Hou Yi. One day, the Queen of Heaven came down to Earth.

She told Yi that as a reward for his bravery, the gods would give him an elixir6 of immortality7 so that he could drink it and join them in heaven.

But Yi was married to a beautiful and kind woman, Chang'e, who he loved dearly.

He wanted to be immortal4, but he wanted to spend his life with her more. So he gave the elixir to his wife and asked her to hide it away.

But Peng Meng broke into Yi's house while he was away and demanded the elixir.

Chang'e couldn't fight him, but she wouldn't allow such a man to have the elixir. She drank it herself and immediately ascended8 into the skies.

When Hou Yi didn't find his wife at home, he went looking for her. The night was bright with the full moon rising high above him.

Yi looked up and was amazed to see a figure which looked like his wife appear in the moon.

Chang'e's love for Hou Yi drew her towards the moon, which was the nearest place to Earth in the heavens.

Upon realizing what had happened, Hou Yi brought her favorite foods, cakes, and fruit out in the moonlight to share with his wife.

On hearing this story, many people participated in bringing their offerings to the moon.

This is one of the origin myths of the Moon Festival.

Sima Qian (司马迁)

The Han emperor, WuDi, re-established the importance of learning and encouraged the production of new works. As a result, ancient works which had arrived the book burning of the first emperor began to re-appear. Sima Qian took on the task of writing a complete history of China.

He became involved in an incident that almost cost his life. he dared to criticize the emperor. The judges sentenced him to death, this sentence was reduced to castration.

He was determined to continue his great work. By the end of his life Sima Qian had written 130 chapters of his work "Shi Ji"(Records of the historian) recording the history of China's first three dynasties

Early in the 15th century, a huge fleet of ships set sail from Nanjing. It was the first of a series of voyages that would, for a brief period, establish China as the leading power of the age. The voyage was led by Zheng He, the most important Chinese adventurer of all time and one of the greatest sailors the world has ever known.

In 1371, Zheng He was born in what is now Yunnan Province to Muslim parents, who named him Ma Sanpao When he was 11 years old, invading Ming armies captured Ma and took him to Nanjing. There he was castrated and made to serve as a eunuch in the imperial household.

Ma befriended a prince there who later became the Yong Le Emperor, one of the Ming Dynasty's most distinguished. Brave, strong, intelligent and totally loyal, Ma won the trust of the prince who, after ascending the throne, gave him a new name and made him Grand Imperial Eunuch.

Yong Le was an ambitious emperor who believed that China's greatness would be increased with an "open-door" policy regarding international trade and diplomacy. In 1405, he ordered Chinese ships to sail to the 1ndian Ocean, and put Zheng He in charge of the voyage. Zheng went on to lead seven expeditions in 28 years, visiting more than 40 countries.

The voyages helped expand foreign interest in Chinese goods such as silk and porcelain. In addition, Zheng He brought exotic foreign items back to China, including the first giraffe ever seen there. At the same time, the fleet's obvious strength meant that the Emperor of China commanded respect and inspired fear all over Asia.

Though Zheng He died in 1433 and was probably buried at sea, a grave and small monument to him still exist in Jiangsu Province. Three years after Zheng He's death, a new emperor banned the construction of oceangoing ships, and China's brief era of naval expansion was over.

Mencius was a wise and kind person who by no means would compromise with evil.

Living close to a cemetery when he was a kid, Mencius often staged the rites which he saw in funeral processions or burial services for amusement. Mother Meng said, “This is not the place I would like to raise my son.”

So they moved to live next to a marketplace. Then Mencius began to imitate merchants hawking wares. “This is not the place I would like to raise my son, either” said his mother.

In the end they settled down near a school. Inspired by what he saw and heard, Mencius naturally started to imitate the courtesy behavior and study habits of the students. Observing this, Mother Meng joyfully said, “This is the place where my son should live from now on.”
